boredomThe study of boredom as a philosophical issue has also led to theories and understanding of the emotion. Many philosophers have studied boredom in different contexts ranging from existential thought to religious significance. The idea that boredom actually is a key to revealing the core of an individual has been postulated as when an individual has no stimulus or focus they are confronted with the meaningless of existence. It is this existential awareness that then reveals the person as a whole.

Other groups of thought state towards boredom being an expression of the vanity of our own existence. This philosophy states that the mere awareness of our own existence should satisfy us and therefore boredom is a result of vanity. Others still consider boredom as a state of waiting. Current philosophers have no good news concerning the progress of our technological society in relation to boredom. The examples they give is that as tasks are increasingly made easier for us through new technologies we will find them more mundane and tedious therefore boredom will increase. There is some evidence towards this when we look at the incident of depression in third world countries. Depression is a first world illness and the incidence of depression in third world societies is practically non existent, consider this with the previous findings of depression being closely linked to boredom.
